Membrane-bound guaiacol peroxidases from maize (Zea mays L.) roots are regulated by methyl jasmonate, salicylic acid, and pathogen elicitors

Abstract: Plant peroxidases are involved in numerous cellular processes in plant development and stress responses. Four plasma membrane-bound peroxidases have been identified and characterized in maize (Zea mays L.) roots. In the present study, maize seedlings were treated with different stresses and signal compounds, and a functional analysis of these membrane-bound class III peroxidases (pmPOX1, pmPOX2a, pmPOX2b, and pmPOX3) was carried out. Total guaiacol peroxidase activities from soluble and microsomal fractions of… Show more

“…Peroxiredoxin, an antioxidant that detoxifies H 2 O 2 (Mika et al, 2010) along with a major stress protein, Heat shock protein22 (Slt 183), might maintain the ionic homeostasis in E8.2-OXDC tomato. This might represent an adaptive mechanism in E8.2-OXDC tomato to protect the mitochondria from oxidative damage.…”

“…Due to a large number of their isoforms and heterogeneous regulation of their expression (Passardi et al 2005) they are good indicators of both biotic and abiotic stresses. Isoenzymes of class III peroxidases are mostly soluble apoplastic and cell wallbound forms (Mika et al 2010). In addition, they can be generated by post-transcriptional and post-translational modifications (Welinder et al 2002).…”

“…Moreover, the activity staining in gel for GPX (Figure 6) and GR also holds true for occurrence of polymorphisms and their variations within the tissue specific. Illustration with GPX isoforms with that of guaiacol as phenolic electron donor could also be able to generate free radicals [31]. A significant variation was recorded under anoxic and hypoxic condition in terms of ROS scavenging activities in plants.…”
