Men’s Experiences of the Criminal Justice System Following Female Perpetrated Intimate Partner Violence

Abstract: The current study aimed to explore men's experience of the UK Criminal Justice System (CJS) following female-perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV). Unstructured face-toface and Skype interviews were conducted with six men aged between 40-65 years. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). “…This is again supported by previous research, as Bates (2019b) described how some men had been laughed at by EXPERIENCES SUPPORTING MALE VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE 23 friends and family when they had disclosed abuse, and had received further victimisation from services where they had not been believed or in some cases had been blamed or accused of being perpetrators. Men have also been known to experience the impact of gender stereotypes within the Criminal Justice System (e.g., see Dutton & White, 2013;McCarrick et al, 2016), and indeed the mixed responses that they receive from these professionals is thought to contribute to what has been called a "bidirectional" lack of trust with police (Tsui, 2014).
