Meningiomas with conspicuous plasma cell-lymphocytic components.A report of five cases

Abstract: Five meningeal neoplasms grossly resembling meningiomas but histologically containing meningothelial cells together with abundant plasma cells and lymphocytes are reported. These masses are regarded as meningiomas with extensive plasma cell--lymphocytic infiltrates.

“…Lymphoplasmacytic meningioma elicits a pronounced chronic inflammatory reaction, which may be confused with the infiltrates of RDD-CNS (27). Recognition of typical meningioma histology coupled with confirmatory immunostaining for epithelial membrane antigen readily differentiates these two processes.…”

“…The proportions of inflammatory and meningothelial components varied from case to case; some might have been true meningioma with a striking inflammatory component [11,20], other were inflammatory masses with nests of trapped hyperplastic meningothelial cells. In all cases, inflammation was not accounted for by an infectious agent, a malignancy or a recognized systemic disorder.…”

“…Inflammatory meningiomas, of which few examples have been documented, contain plasma cell-lymphocytic components [lymphocyte-rich meningioma (LRM)], which were absent in our patient (4). Radiation treatment of tumors may cause necrosis with attendant inflammation.…”
