Mersacidin eradicates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a mouse rhinitis model

Abstract: In the mouse rhinitis model, mersacidin was able to eradicate MRSA colonization. The site of action (epithelium versus blood) of mersacidin needs to be further explored.

“…Mersacidin has shown very promising activity against methicillin-resistant S. aureus. 32,33 Mersacidin interacts with a different part of lipid II compared with the current drug of last resort, vancomycin, suggesting it could be a complementary treatment strategy. 34 Figure 4 Nukacin ISK-1 mutants and structure-activity relationship conclusions.…”

“…Many non-lantibiotic bacteriocins, such as lactococcin appear to interact with membrane-associated receptor proteins, before their membrane perturbing activity. In contrast, a specific proteinaceous receptor for lantibiotic species on the outer surface of bacteria has not been found so far [27]. This study was designed to isolate the strains from hospital environment and to screen for the epidermin genes using traditional polymerase chain reaction (PCR).…”

“…A notable example is mersacidin, a tetracyclic peptide produced by Bacillus spp. which can suppress methicillin-resistant S. aureus and is comparable with vancomycin, but without the development of cross resistance (Chatterjee et al, 1992a and1992b;Kruszewska et al, 2004).…”
