Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the vagus nerve

Abstract: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare, aggressive, malignant neoplasm, which arises from extraskeletal sites in 30-40 per cent of cases. It is extremely rare in children. We present a novel case of childhood mesenchymal chondsarcoma arising from the vagus nerve in the neck, resulting in paralysis of the right vocal fold. “…Plain radiography of EMC shows a soft-tissue mass with mineralized chondroid matrix due to arc-shaped or stippled calcification in over 50% of cases,10 and CT commonly depicts coarse calcification and predominantly peripheral enhancement 13. We observed plain radiographic abnormalities in case 2 of our study, but not in case 1.…”

“…The case by Tuncer and colleagues [13] represents the 1st congenital MC described both in skeletal and extraskeletal sites (orbit), prior to the present case. Other unusual sites of extraskeletal MC described in the pediatric population (in patients less than 20 years of age) are thyroid [14], vagus nerve [15], lid [16], and sinonasal tract [17]. Surprisingly, in cases involving these unusual sites, the patients were all females.…”
