Metabacillus sediminilitoris sp. nov., a marine bacterium isolated from a tidal sediment

Abstract: A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming, motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated as strain DSL-17T, was isolated from a tidal sediment of the East China Sea and characterized phylogenetically and phenotypically. The strain could grow at 16–47 °C (optimum 37 °C), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum 6.0) and with 1–7% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 3 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DSL-17T was related to members of the genus Metabacillus … Show more

“…On the other hand, Metabacillus sediminilitoris obtained in this study was also characterized before as Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming bacteria, grow at 16-47°C and alkaline pH 6.0-10.0 and tolerate NaCl up to 7% (w/v). The G+C content of its genomic DNA was 35.7mol% (36). Species of the genus Metabacillus are ubiquitous in natural environments and have been isolated from a wide variety of habitats, including soil, a hypersaline lake and a marine coastal region (37).…”

“…Test panels were used according to the manufacturer's instructions. Sensitivity to various antibiotics was tested on MA using different antibiotic discs (μg per disc): amoxicillin (10), streptomycin (10), cefoxitin (30), rifampicin (5), erythromycin (15), gentamicin (10), ampicillin (10), kanamycin (30), tetracycline (30), chloramphenicol (30), neomycin (30) and bacitracin (0.04 IU per disc).…”

“…At the time of writing (February 2022), the genus Metabacillus comprised 16 species with valid names (https://lpsn.dsmz.de/genus/metabacillus). Members of the genus Metabacillus have been isolated from a wide range of environments such as oysters [2], pebbles [3], faeces [4], blood [5], salt lake [6, 7], sediment [8–10] and wastewater [11]. Cells of the genus Metabacillus are Gram-stain-positive or Gram-stain-variable, aerobic, rod-shaped, motile or non-motile and grow at 4–45 °C.…”
