Metabolic and Hormonal Responses to Exercise in Children and Adolescents

Abstract: Children are better adapted to aerobic exercise because their energy expenditure appears to rely more on oxidative metabolism than is the case in adults. Glycolytic activity is age-dependent, and the relative proportion of fat utilisation during prolonged exercise appears higher in children than in adults.

“…Such a period is accompanied by significant increases in serum testosterone over six month intervals and a concomitant increase in stature, body mass and testicular volume (25,47). Increases in circulating growth androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, have an anabolic effect on structural protein production, leading to muscular and skeletal development (8).…”

“…Data from our practice indicates that players pre-peak height velocity (PHV) do not respond to traditional high intensity or sprint interval training, possibly due to a lower glycolytic capacity to supply ATP during high intensity exercise (6). However, the same protocols provide an appropriate stimulus in those who are circum-or post-PHV.…”

“…The glycolytic activity depends on the age and to the proportional utilization of the fat during prolonged exercises seems to be higher in children than in adults (5) . In such sense, researchers of the growing and development point out that optimum phase to train this ability occurs during the pulling up of the puberty growth, in the first pubertal phase (an anterior phase to the arrival of the menarche).…”
