Metabolic characteristics and therapeutic potential of brown and ?beige? adipose tissues

Abstract: According to the International Diabetes Federation, 10.9 million people have diabetes mellitus (DM) in Russia; however, only up to 4 million are registered. In addition, 11.9 million people have impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose levels [1]. One of the significant risk factors for type 2 DM (T2DM) is obesity, which increases insulin resistance (IR). IR is the major pathogenetic link to T2DM. According to current concepts, there are three types of adipose tissue: white adipose tissue (WAT),… Show more

“…In this study, based on the Yakut population living in the coldest region of Siberia (t°minimum −71.2 °C), we analyze serum leptin levels and data on 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 10 genes ( UCP1 , UCP2 , UCP3 , FNDC5 , PPARGC1A , CIDEA , PTGS2 , TRPV1 , LEPR , BDNF ) that are possibly involved in nonshivering thermogenesis processes. These genes were selected based on the available literature data on nonshivering thermogenesis activation mechanisms and genome-wide analysis of cold adaptation in humans [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ]. The leptin levels were three times higher in females (18.87 ± 12.31 ng/mL) than in males (6.56 ± 8.47 ng/mL) ( p < 0.01).…”

“…Interestingly, it was shown the opposite expression of FNDC5 in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue of T2D patients compared to lean, obese and pre-diabetic subjects [ 26 ]. Diabetic patients displayed the lowest expression of FNDC5 in adipose tissue and circulating irisin level.…”
