Metabolic profile and genotoxicity in obese rats exposed to cigarette smoke

Abstract: Objective: Experimental studies have shown that exposure to cigarette smoke has negative effects on lipid metabolism and oxidative stress status. Cigarette smoke exposure in nonpregnant and pregnant rats causes significant genotoxicity (DNA damage). However, no previous studies have directly evaluated the effects of obesity or the association between obesity and cigarette smoke exposure on genotoxicity. Therefore, the aim of the present investigation was to evaluate DNA damage levels, oxidative stress status a… Show more

“…Nonetheless, there are other implicated factors that are worth further investigation. For instance, smoking was known to precipitate metabolic syndrome [ 30 ] and some thyroid pathological conditions [ 31 ]. Our female study group was less engaged in smoking compared to the males of the same geographic area.…”

“…In fact, the effect of cigarette smoke on serum lipids has been described previously [43] . One possible mechanism is that CS increases catecholamine levels, which further increases lipolysis and ultimately increases FA uptake by myocytes [44] , [45] .…”

“…In an animal experiment, exposure to cigarette smoking enhanced the negative effects of obesity on genotoxicity, impaired antioxidant defenses, and caused early glucose intolerance . Inflammatory processes, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance could be all involved in the pathogenesis of GDM .…”
