Metabolic syndrome in Argentine women: ATPIII, IDF, IDF/AHA/NHLBI; What criterion should be used?

Abstract: We found more prevalence of cardiometabolic and MS risk factors among the group of post-menopausal patients. The responsible mechanisms would respond to the secondary hypoestrogenaemia at the cease of the ovarian function. Because of this fact, menopausal women should be considered a risk group for the development of MS.

“…The alteration in the metabolism of VLDL causes reduced availability of substrates for the formation of HDL, which leads to the formation of highly atherogenic low‐density lipoprotein, which then easily crosses the arterial endothelium, thereby starting the atherosclerotic process . Therefore, the abnormalities produced during the metabolism of lipoproteins in subjects with visceral obesity determine the presence of the “atherogenic triad” (increased TG‐rich VLDL, low amounts of HDL, and high levels of low‐density lipoprotein) . Eventually, these abnormalities lead to atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries and the onset of coronary heart disease …”
