Metabonomic analysis of hepatitis B virus-induced liver failure: identification of potential diagnostic biomarkers by fuzzy support vector machine

Abstract: Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-induced liver failure is an emergent liver disease leading to high mortality. The severity of liver failure may be reflected by the profile of some metabolites. This study assessed the potential of using metabolites as biomarkers for liver failure by identifying metabolites with good discriminative performance for its phenotype. The serum samples from 24 HBV-induced liver failure patients and 23 healthy volunteers were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-M… Show more

“…Metabolomics is a useful system approach in the understanding of global changes of metabolites in animals in response to alterations in nutrition, genetics, environment, and gut microbiota (Nicholson et al, 2004;Mao et al, 2008). However, it has not been extensively used in the field of swine study.…”

“…Metabolomics, an important branch of systems biology, is defined as the quantitative measurement of small molecular metabolites in a biological sample (Mao et al, 2008;Nicholson and Lindon, 2008). It has offered novel insights into dietary effects by measuring and mathematically modeling changes in metabolic products (He et al, 2009).…”

“…Among the various tools used for metabolomics, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has emerged as an useful and powerful method due to its noninvasiveness, rapidity, reproducibility, need for small sample volumes, and high accuracy in metabolic profiling2324. NMR based metabolomics approach has been used to understand the metabolic dysregulation in humans upon viral infections like hepatitis252627 and HIV2829.…”

“…So plasma was believed to provide a rich pool of disease-associated metabolites. Metabonomics, the unbiased identification and quantification of all the metabolites present in a specific biological sample (from an organism) [27], is very important in liver disease research [28,29].…”
