Metaform optics: Bridging nanophotonics and freeform optics

Abstract: The demand for high-resolution optical systems with a compact form factor, such as augmented reality displays, sensors, and mobile cameras, requires creating new optical component architectures. Advances in the design and fabrication of freeform optics and metasurfaces make them potential solutions to address the previous needs. Here, we introduce the concept of a metaform—an optical surface that integrates the combined benefits of a freeform optic and a metasurface into a single optical component. We experime… Show more

“…For high-performance meta-devices, one may consider the necessary elements, the precise alignment, the stability, etc. A few prototypes of imaging systems combining meta-optics and refractive optics have been developed 119 , 195 . For instance, a portable packaged full-stoke polarization camera is presented by integrating a metagrating with an off-the-shelf catalog lens and a CMOS imaging sensor 119 .…”

“…The simulation results indicate a potential path to larger FOVs up to 77.3 °horizontally and vertically (Hong et al, 2017). A recent work done by Nikolov et al introduced a new concept and working principles for a metaform which integrates a freeform optic and a metasurface into one single optical element (Nikolov et al, 2021). The metaform can be used as an optical combiner for AR NEDs and it shows promises to solve optical design challenges for AR NEDs.…”

“…The last research to be introduced is about the hybridization of freeform optics and metasurface, so called meta-form optics, by D. K. Nikolov et al, published in 2021 [ 30 ]. The merits of freeform optics in advanced compact optical systems including AR and VR displays have been verified through many publications.…”
