Metagenomic Insights into the Bacterial Functions of a Diesel-Degrading Consortium for the Rhizoremediation of Diesel-Polluted Soil

Abstract: Diesel is a complex pollutant composed of a mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Because of this complexity, diesel bioremediation requires multiple microorganisms, which harbor the catabolic pathways to degrade the mixture. By enrichment cultivation of rhizospheric soil from a diesel-polluted site, we have isolated a bacterial consortium that can grow aerobically with diesel and different alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as the sole carbon and energy source. Microbiome diversity … Show more

“…Hence, there is a dearth of literature on the effects of contaminant imbibition on seed viability and germination rates—something necessary to complement microcosm studies on phytoremediation of organic contaminants. The aim of the present study is to bridge this gap by examining the effect of exposure to diesel fuel on the seed viability and germination rate of Medicago sativa , a plant with great reclamation potential for soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Thus, this is evidence that both the enrichment method and randomly picking colonies grown on crude-oil-coated agar plates, apart from yielding hydrocarbon degraders, may produce some unwanted "companions" (e.g., Clostridium sensu stricto 16 and Clostridioides). In this case, cooperation in the metabolic degradation of pollution should have naturally selected the microbial population, as shown recently [46,47]. On the other hand, some of these members might have been considered not necessarily beneficial since some representatives of the Brevundimonas [48] and Enterococcus [49] genera are also known as opportunistic pathogens.…”

“…The alcohol dehydrogenase catalyzed step is a very important one in the metabolic processing of aliphatic hydrocarbons and side chain reactions of aromatics, and their derivatives. The enzyme has a broad substrate speci city on various classes of aliphatic, alicyclic, and aromatic alcohols and hydroxyls (van Beilen et al 2003, Hirano et al 2005, Zhou et al 2013Garrido-Sanz et al 2019). It is highly plausible that these genes are involved in the rapid disappearance of short chained aliphatics from the microcosm.…”
