Metal-induced asthma and chest X-ray changes in welders

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the coexisting factors and usefulness of diagnostic methods in metal-induced asthma in Polish welders. Materials and Methods: Examination of 50 welders occupationally exposed to metals and with suspicion of metal-induced asthma (group A), 100 welders occupationally exposed to metals but without suspicion of metal-induced asthma (group B), and two control groups (10 patients with atopic asthma and 10 healthy subjects) was carried out. Questionnaire survey, clini… Show more

“…12 A study from India reported higher respiratory impairment in smoking welders than non-smoking welders, indicating the synergistic effect of smoking along with inhaled gases on the lung function among welders. 13,14 Welders also are at risk for developing skin conditions, such as hyper pigmentation with an increased frequency as observed among the welders in a study at rural Delhi, India.…”

“…The onset of respiratory symptoms may lead to diagnosis of asthma immediately or later, up to 8 years [119][120][121]. The first case of Mn-induced OA in a welder was published in 2008; this worker developed a 55% decrease in FEV 1 and dyspnea and an increase in eosinophils count in sputum after a bronchial challenge with 0.1% Mn chloride solution [122]. In conclusion, although the first ECRHS study did not reveal any overall association between welding and asthma, OA might occur in welders.…”

“…Bhumika studied the welders in a ship building industrial factory and reported decrease of lung functional tests (10). Previous studies reported decrease of lung functional tests and changes in chest X-ray in welders (13,14). The decrease of the lung functional tests result had a reverse relation with welding history (Table 3).…”
