“…6). These results are in agreement with the study on BY-2 tobacco cells that indicated down-regulation of NtZIP1 by Fe excess (Sano et al , 2012), and with known regulation of AtVTL1 by Fe deficiency in Arabidopsis (Gollhofer et al , 2014). Thus enhanced expression of NtZIP1 , NtZIP2 , and NtMTP1A and decreased expression of NtVTL in the apical segments of roots grown at 4 µM Cd might suggest a low Zn and/or Fe status at the cellular level, although in these root fragments a decrease in the total metal concentration was noted only for Fe, and only in segments from roots exposed to 4 µM Cd+0.5 µM Zn (Fig.…”

“…In tobacco their function remains largely unknown. The only up to date study was performed on NtZIP1 and suggests its involvement in Fe transport (Sano et al , 2012). The most extensive analysis has been performed on Arabidopsis.…”

“…Accordingly, here we found two copies of NtZIP5: NtZIP5A and NtZIP5B (Additional file 2). Detailed bioinformatics analysis showed that NtZIP5A has a nucleotide sequence identical with NtZIP1 previously identified by Sano et al [31], and here we provided data based on which NtZIP1 was renamed NtZIP5A.…”

“…NtZIP5A/B -a novel Zn deficiency-inducible transporter involved in Zn and Cd uptake NtZIP1 (AB505626 / NM_001325745.1) was first cloned by Sano et al [31] from tobacco BY-2 cells. However, he focused primarily on NtNRAMP1, and only an initial study on NtZIP1 was performed.…”

“…Study of Cailliatte et al ( 2009 ) demonstrated that Arabidopsis transgenic plants overexpressing AtNRAMP6 gene were hypersensitive to Cd, although plant Cd content remained unchanged, thereby indicating that modification in expression pattern of AtNRAMP6 affects distribution and availability of Cd within the cell. However, Sano et al ( 2012 ) have shown that Nicotiana tabacum NRAMP1 gene ( NtNRAMP1 ), a plasma membrane transporter, when overexpressed in tobacco BY-2 cells increases resistance of the cells to both Fe and Cd, and suggested that NtNRAMP1 moderates Fe-uptake and prevents toxicity resulting from excess Fe or Cd application. Tiwari et al ( 2014 ) also demonstrated that OsNRAPM1 , localized on plasma membrane of endodermis and pericycle cell, when expressed in Arabidopsis provides tolerance against As and Cd with their enhanced accumulation in root and shoot, and proposed that modification in this gene may be helpful in reducing the risk of food chain contamination by these toxic heavy metals.…”
