Metastasis of ovarian cancer to the breast: A report of two cases and a review of the literature

Abstract: Metastasis of ovarian cancer to the breast (MOCB) is a rare event. Clinical presentations of MOCB vary and surgery is the mainstay of treatment. The current study presents two cases of MOCB in women with recurrent ovarian cancer first diagnosed in April 2011 and October 2013, respectively. The patients presented to the clinic with a localized, palpable, painful mass in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast and a centrally localized, palpable, painful mass of the left breast, respectively. Breast sonogra… Show more

“…Other studies have reported that up to 95% of serous papillary carcinomas exhibit nuclear expression of WT-1and membrane expression of CA125, which is only present in <10% of different types of breast cancer ( 35 37 ). A more recent study also suggested the value of GATA-3 and PAX-8 as biomarkers for breast cancer ( 38 , 39 ). Consistent with a previous study ( 3 ), the results of the current study indicate that no single marker is absolutely specific and its expression is always variable between primary and metastatic lesions, particularly in tissue biopsies.…”

“…[ 5 ] However, metastasis from extramammary malignancy to the breast is a rare condition, accounting for only 0.3% of all breast malignancies. [ 3 ] Furthermore, the patient in this case study is diagnosed with borderline tumor with micro-invasive carcinoma of ovary with low malignant potential, which appears to be even more rare. Breast metastatic lesions are typically described as appearing quite benign on both mammographic and clinical examinations.…”

“…[ 41 ] Immunohistochemical markers are also significant and the combined use of multiple markers can provide more sufficient diagnostic evidence. [ 3 ] WT-1, PAX-8, and GCDFP-15 play a major role in differentiation between primary breast tumors and breast metastasis from ovarian tumors. WT-1 is mainly expressed in ovarian cancer, and less than 10% of primary breast cancers are positive for WT-1, which are usually weakly expressed or focally expressed.…”

“…Ovarian cancer exhibits high rates of mortality compared with other gynecological malignances ( 1 ). Investigations into the pathogenesis of ovarian cancer have reported that diagnosis occurs within the later stages of pathogenesis, which has been associated with lower overall survival rates ( 2 , 3 ).…”
