Metastatic Synovial Sarcoma With Cervical Spinal Cord Compression Treated With Posterior Ventral Resection: Case Report

Abstract: Context: Synovial sarcomas, which represent 5% to 10% of all adult soft-tissue sarcomas, usually metastasize to the lungs. Metastasis to the spine is rare. Spinal cord compression due to spinal metastasis occurs in approximately 3% of patients with extraspinal soft-tissue sarcomas. Method: Case report. Findings: A 26-year-old woman presented with neck pain, arm weakness, and a history of metastatic synovial sarcoma originating at the right knee. Computed tomography revealed destruction of the odontoid and C2 b… Show more

“…According to our literature search, less than 50 cases of spinal SS are published in the literature, the majority of which are treated with surgical resection. The majority of the published papers are case reports [ 2 ]. The primary goal of treatment for spinal metastasis is to achieve pain relief and maintain spinal stability while preserving neurologic function.…”

“…Synovial sarcoma (SS) is a soft tissue sarcoma that tends to spread to distant sites, including the lung [ 1 ]. Spinal metastasis is a rare complication in patients with SS [ 2 ], and it can cause significant morbidity. The symptoms of SS of the spine may include pain, weakness, and numbness in the affected area, as well as difficulty with movement and coordination.…”

“…Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cervical spine revealed a well-defined oval, lobulated, extramedullary mass lesion (1.2 × 3.1 × 1.5 cm) in C6-C7 intervertebral foramen. [7][8][9] However, in these cases, a large heterogenous tumor with bone destruction and predominant paravertebral location were the prominent features. The lesion was hyperintense on T2 weighted and hypointense on T1-weighted sequences [Figures 1a and 1b].…”
