Metastatic trichilemmal carcinoma in a patient with breast cancer

Abstract: Trichilemmal carcinoma (TC) is described as a very rare cancer of the skin adnexa. Ninety per cent of the lesions present on the scalp. Prognostic factors in TC are limited to lymph node status and surgical margins, with no statistical significance observed for age or gender of the patient, size of tumour or locoregional recurrence. We present a 46-year-old black patient who developed TC during treatment for breast cancer. Postoperative histology of the scalp lesion excision confirmed no involved margins. At t… Show more

“…A total of 87.01% of TLCs (201 of the 231 cases) occurred in the sun-exposed sites (head, neck, arm, and hand), 6.7 times of the non-exposed sites, suggesting the significant role of UV in the pathogenesis of TLC. Ten cases (4.33%) had previous carcinoma: four cases with breast cancer (including Case 2) ( 18 20 ), five cases with BCC (two of whom also had SCC) ( 13 ,) ( 21 – 24 ), and one case with both SCC and Bowen’s disease ( 25 ). There were four and six cases in men and women, respectively (c 2 = 0.228, P = 0.633).…”

“…[11] We found that most cases on the periorbital region were Stage I or II and most tumors received local surgical excision, some received MMS or methylaminolevulinate-photodynamic therapy. [5,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] There are no published guidelines on the follow-up after treatment of patients with TLC.…”

“… 13 In addition, metastatic TC was also reported in a patient with breast cancer. 14 Recently, Ha et al found TP53 mutations in TC patients who had an aggressive clinical course, so genetic alterations identified may further suggest the potential treatment options for TC. 15 Regular follow-up for early detection of recurrence and metastasis is needed.…”
