Methacrylate-Substituted Mixed-Metal Clusters Derived from Zigzag Chains of [ZrO8]/[ZrO7] and [TiO6] Polyhedra

Abstract: Reaction of titanium butoxide and zirconium butoxide with methacrylic acid in different molar ratios results in the formation of the mixed-metal clusters Ti 4 Zr 4 O 6 (OBu) 4 (OMc) 16 , Ti 2 Zr 4 O 4 (OBu) 2 (OMc) 14 , Ti 4 Zr 2 O 4 (OBu) 6 (OMc) 10 , and Ti 2 Zr 6 O 6 (OMc) 20 (OMc = methacrylate). The molecular structures of these clusters have been determined by single-crys- [a]

“…Figure 2. Arrangement of the Ti octahedra in 1 (a) [6,7] and 2 (b) Several types of carboxylate-substituted titanium polyoxoalkoxides have been obtained by reaction of Ti(OR) 4 with carboxylic acids, [9Ϫ11] with the degree of substitution by carboxylate groups (r ϭ carboxylate/Ti ratio) ranging from 1.78 in [Ti 9 O 8 (OR) 4 (OOCRЈ) 16 ] to 0.5 in [Ti 4 O 2 (OR) 10 (OOCRЈ) 2 ]. Compared with the known clusters, 2 is exceptional in two respects: (i) it is the only cluster prepared by substitution of a pre-formed polyoxoalkoxide (with concomitant rearrangement of the cluster core), and (ii) it has the lowest degree of substitution (r ϭ 0.33).…”

“…Reaction of the clusters with bidentate ligands may even lead to the complete degradation to monomeric compounds; for example, [Zr(acac) 2 (OMc) 2 ] (OMc ϭ methacrylate, acac ϭ acetylacetonate) was obtained from the reaction of [Zr 4 O 2 (OMc) 12 ] with acetylacetone. [4] …”

“…Mixed metal Ti/Zr oxo clusters have been prepared by reaction of metal alkoxide mixtures with methacrylic acid or acetic acid [17,18] A Ti/Zr oxo cluster with a different structure, namely Ti 2 Zr 4 (l 3 -O) 5 (l 3 -OH) 2 (OPr)(OPiv) 11 Á2HOPiv (3, HOPiv = pivalic acid, Fig. 5), was obtained from mixtures of various titanium and zirconium alkoxides and varying amounts of pivalic acid.…”

“…Oxozirconium clusters bearing (meth)acrylate groups have been prepared by Schubert et al [19,20], through the sol-gel process involving the hydrolysis/condensation of tetraalkoxyzirconium in the presence of excess of (meth) acrylic acid. These carboxylic acids act as bidentate ligands, decreasing the reactivity of the sol-gel process.…”
