This paper presents an approach to model an unknown Ladder Logic based Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) program consisting of Boolean logic and counters using Process Mining techniques. First, we tap the inputs and outputs of a PLC to create a data flow log. Second, we propose a method to translate the obtained data flow log to an event log suitable for Process Mining. In a third step, we propose a hybrid Petri net (PN) and neural network approach to approximate the logic of the actual underlying PLC program. We demonstrate the applicability of our proposed approach on a case study with three simulated scenarios.

Abstrak – Petri net adalah satu di antara yang digunakan untuk pemodelan sistem otomatis. Tulisan ini melaporkan penggunaan model petri net pada purwarupa alat destilasi etanol otomatis, menggunakan PLC sebagai pengendali utama. Model proses mencakup perangkat keras dan lunak. Sistem pengaturan yang dimodelkan bertujuan menjaga agar suhu dalam wadah pemanas berada dalam kisaran titik didih etanol yaitu 80 ºC, serta pengamanan perangkat terutama terkait elemen pemanas. Pemodelan sistem pengaturan dikembangkan menggunakan petri net bebas, untuk implementasi pada PLC. Implementasi menghasilkan perangkat yang secara konsisten melakukan destilasi secara otomatis, dan menghasilkan cairan dengan kadar etanol 80% dari cairan awal berkadar 40%. Kata kunci – Petri net, PLC, destilasi, pengaturan suhu, pemanasAbstract – Petri net is on of models commonly used for automation and manufacture. This paper reports the use of petri net in modeling automated distillation process of ethanol, using PLC as main controller. The model encompassed hardware and software parts of the prototype built. The control system was aimed to keep the system at ethanol’s boiling point of 80ºC, while maintaining the hardware’s safety especially the heater. Free style petri net was used, then implemented on PLC. The resulting prototype has performed consistent performance of automatic distillation, producing 80% ethanol out of 40% ethanol.Keyword – Petri net, PLC, distillation, temperature control, heater

Manufacturing companies are facing new market demands, mostly driven by global competition and digitalization. In this context, more efficient, flexible, adaptable and evolvable mechatronic and manufacturing systems are required, which enable quick adjustments to the production in order to address (all these) market changes. However, production idle times due to such re-configurations and adaptations might be costly. In this paper, a live updates concept for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) is presented. The proposed design employs a Petri net runtime engine, in which the executed functional program (the Petri net model with its interpretation) is updated while running, without system shutdown and restart being needed. To this end, a quarantine-mode execution and monitoring approach is used for the new PLC program functional validation. A reconfigurable Vernadat machine case study is also presented.
