Methodological considerations for survey research: Validity, reliability, and quantitative analysis

Abstract: As translation and interpreting studies continue to develop cognitive theories of translator and interpreter behavior and processing, there has been increased emphasis on research methods and data collection methodologies to glean new insights into the translation process. This article presents a critical review of survey research methods in Cognitive Translation Studies and argues for their inclusion as a means of better understanding translator and interpreter attitudes, behaviors, perceptions, and values. “…Winkler and Berenbon (2020) further validate a survey on scientists' attitudes toward data reuse, highlighting the need for both validity and reliability in survey instruments. Mellinger and Hanson (2020) extend this discussion to the field of Cognitive Translation Studies, emphasizing the need for alignment with theoretical frameworks and constructs and the consideration of measurement invariance and quantitative analysis in survey research.…”

“…Tujuannya untuk menentukan nilai korelasi dan konsistensi internal antar item. Sebagaimana dicatat oleh (Mellinger & Hanson, 2020), nilai validitas empiris diperoleh dari hasil tes yang diberikan kepada responden yang dievaluasi. Pengujian ini menggunakan korelasi product-moment yang dianalisis dengan SPSS.…”

“…Pilot testing, also called feasibility testing, is also conducted prior to scale evaluation; employing quantitative methodologies, it entails survey administration with a larger sample size (Wolf et al, 2016). Psychometric tests typically include statistical modeling, factor analysis, and bivariate testing (e.g., Pearson’s chi-square) (Mellinger & Hanson, 2021). In the scale evaluation phases, reliability and validity tests are conducted (Boateng et al, 2018).…”

“…Reliability testing includes internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha >.70) and test-retest analysis (correlation coefficient). Types of construct validity testing include convergent and divergent (i.e., discriminant); correlation coefficients are calculated for each test (Mellinger & Hanson, 2021). Floor and ceiling effects are also a measure of scale construct validity (Mellinger & Hanson, 2021).…”
