Methodological guidelines for reducing the complexity of data warehouse development for transactional blood bank systems

Abstract: Over time, data warehouse (DW) systems have become more difficult to develop because of the growing heterogeneity of data sources. Despite advances in research and technology, DW projects are still too slow for pragmatic results to be generated. Here, we address the following question: how can the complexity of DW development for integration of heterogeneous transactional information systems be reduced? To answer this, we proposed methodological guidelines based on cycles of conceptual modeling and data analys… Show more

“…All blood donations in 2007 through 2010 of the data warehouse established for the Retrovirus Epidemiological Donor Study II in three Brazilian blood centers were studied: Fundação Pró-Sangue (FPS) in São Paulo State (southeastern region), Fundação Centro de Hematologia e Hemoterapia de Minas Gerais (Hemominas), in Minas Gerais State (southeastern region) and Fundação de Hematologia e Hemoterapia de Pernambuco (HEMOPE) in Pernambuco State (northeastern region) (9,10) .…”

“…For instance, an organization dealing with security systems may want analytical software that explores the security loopholes in their own organization and offers solutions to handle the concern. Software of such nature cannot be sold to any other party as it may compromise their internal security arrangements (Takecian, et al, 2013). They would thus have to meet the cost of software copyrights and non-disclosure on the part of the developers.…”

“…However, these systems are heterogeneous, so obtaining nationwide data is not an easy task. In the Brazilian project, the variables from the US REDS program were adapted to the Brazilian context and a data warehouse was developed by the Institute of Mathematic and Statistics (USP) to receive and validate the data 2 . During REDS-II, data were transferred to a central data-coordinating center.…”

A web application was developed to streamline the process, including a system for data management and quality control checking for consistency.…”
