“…A number of scholars have been postulating that cognitive linguistics should put a stronger emphasis on applications of empirical data derived form corpora, e.g. Geeraerts, 2006;Grondelaers, Geeraerts & Speelman, 2007;Deignan, 2008;Heylen et al, 2008;Gries & Divjak, 2010. They emphasize that since the usage-based approach to language study is among the central theses of cognitive linguistics, the use of natural language samples brings important advantages to cognitive linguistic research.…”

“…Those data matrix patterns are different from interaction effects and multicollinearity, which are generally accounted for in multivariate analyses and which often have a clear linguistic interpretation. Moreover, appropriate techniques, such as MCA and Structural Equation Modeling, are needed to deal with those patterns (for an overview of potential techniques, see Heylen et al 2008).…”

“…In many studies, including Stefanowitsch & Gries (2003), the Fisher exact test is used, although in a later paper Gries (2008) explores a measure based on dispersion rather than frequency. The choice of statistical method for particular comparisons is an area rife with confusion and contention (Heylen et al 2008). Wiechmann (2008) tested forty seven association measures and his results showed that the Fisher exact test performed well, but that a method called Minimum Sensitivity might be the best measure of association, although it is clear that defining "best" in linguistic terms is not going to be a straightforward task.…”
