Methodologies for generation of hazard indicator maps and flood prone areas: municipality of Ipojuca/PE.

Abstract: Studies focusing on urban vulnerabilities due to river floods need the construction of hazard maps and definition of potential flood areas. The objective of this article is to describe the development of a methodology for hazard mapping of river floods and to map areas susceptible to inundation on a municipal scale. The study area is the municipality of Ipojuca -Pernambuco State with area of 527.11 km 2 and population of 80,637 inhabitants. The first methodology uses the hydrologic-hydraulic simulation for the… Show more

“…Several hydraulic indicators can be used to classify the level of flood hazards. Ribeiro Neto et al(2016) recommended the flood hazards mapping by using indicators based on depth and flow velocity. There are five suggested indicators, namely flow depth, flow velocity, energy head, intensity, and flow force.…”

“…The most relevant physical characteristics of flood events are flow velocity, water depth, and duration, which may determine their intensity and destructive capacity, and hence, may provide a measure of its hazard [73,74]. We built flood intensity maps for the 2017 flood event, postprocessing the results from the hydrodynamic simulations in GIS tools and using the flood intensity categories proposed by Cançado et al [75] (Table 3).…”
