Methodology for Establishing a Community-Wide Life Laboratory for Capturing Unobtrusive and Continuous Remote Activity and Health Data

Abstract: An end-to-end suite of technologies has been established for the unobtrusive and continuous monitoring of health and activity changes occurring in the daily life of older adults over extended periods of time. The technology is aggregated into a system that incorporates the principles of being minimally obtrusive, while generating secure, privacy protected, continuous objective data in real-world (home-based) settings for months to years. The system includes passive infrared presence sensors placed throughout t… Show more

“…Dedicated home systems require installation, which can be a barrier to wider dissemination. Several approaches to this need have been developed, including prepared field kits (ie, “sensors in a box”) for ready deployment [41] and online video installation guides [15]. With these and other advances, one can reasonably anticipate that some of these solutions could be proposed in everyday care to a large population in the coming decade.…”

“…The adoption of these methodologies has been hampered by a number of factors [15,16]. The approach requires an interdisciplinary team, there is a multitude of sensors and devices that can be used, and there are no agreed-upon standards for these digital biomarkers.…”

“…Improving our understanding of how a patient’s capacity, that is, what a patient can do, relates to their functional behavior, that is, what they actually do, is foundational to building a bridge between physiological changes induced by a given therapy and changes in a patient’s independence [27]. A more complete chain of evidence, incorporating physiological, functional, and subjective data, will enable development of interventions that genuinely improve patient HRQoL.…”

“…The study protocols were approved by the Institutional Review Board (Living Laboratory IRB# 2765; ISAAC IRB# 2353). Full details of study enrollment, assessment procedures and technical protocols have previously been described (15,22,23). The data reported here covers the period of continuous in-home sensor activity monitoring from January 2015 through August 2017 in these cohorts.…”
