Methods for operando coherent X-ray diffraction of battery materials at the Advanced Photon Source

Abstract: Bragg coherent X‐ray diffraction imaging has become valuable for visualization of the structural, morphological and strain evolution of crystals in operando electrode materials. As the electrode material particles (either in a single‐crystal form or an aggregation form of single crystals) are evenly dispersed and randomly oriented in the electrode laminate, the submicrometer‐sized coherentX‐ray beam can be used to probe the local properties of electrode material crystals using two approaches. Coherent multi‐cr… Show more

“…It is estimated that the cold tip of a typical "Displex" cryostat system that is not optimized for vibrational stability moves by tens of microns every few seconds during the Joule-Thomson cooling cycle. This is incompatible with the 600 nm focus of the 34-ID-C beamline [18] with a small crystal.…”

“…The BCDI method uses a coherent X-ray beam produced by an undulator on a 3rd generation synchrotron. The experiments reported here used the 34-ID-C beamline of the Advanced Photon Source (APS), which has mechanically stable optics and sample positioning, dedicated to BCDI [18]. The experiments used 9 keV X-rays monochromated to 2 × 10 −4 bandwidth to enhance the longitudinal coherence and a horizontal aperture near the source to provide sufficient spatial coherence to extend over the entire sample [19].…”

“…The phase information is not observable with XRD and thus the relative phase information is lost [77,78]. Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging (BCDI) can be used to solve the phase problem experienced with XRD by oversampling a small sample size and using iterative reconstruction algorithms [79]. It uses a very small beam size (1 μM × 1 μM) and can be used to observe both morphological and strain information for a single crystal at the nanoscale [79][80][81].…”
