Methods for matching compressed video to ATM networks

Abstract: Over the last few years three technologies have reached the stage of maturation where then can become synergistic. These are wideband, high speed networking, high quality video compression (MPEG-I and 11), and high capacity affordable digital storage media. This paper addresses the interaction of these three technologies. In particular, it examines the problem of taking a coTapressed video data stream that is stored on a server, and h n s m i t t i n g it over an ATM channel which has a capacity smaller than th… Show more

“…It can also be used in cases where the examined video sequence has undergone some processing but maintains the same GOP structure as the original watermarked sequence. For example, this may happen when the video sequence is encoded at a different bit-rate using one of the techniques proposed in [39,40]. This detector is very fast since it introduces negligible additional computational load to the decoding operation.…”

“…Designing a scalable encoder where the bitstream consists of multiple layers is another approach, but has the disadvantage of providing only a small number of possible transmission rates 22]. A promising approach is to perform the rate shaping process in the compressed domain 15,22]. This requires only partial decompression of the bitstream, and avoids the need to perform the most computationally intensive operations of the encoder.…”

“…Our simulations show that video carried using the ABR service, with the coder's sending rate controlled using Packet-Pair, gives a perceptually high quality even in the presence of congestion. [SAFR95] shows how to adapt the sending rate for stored video. Second, [GROS95] describes a scheme based on ''fast'' renegotiation of a CBR rate.…”
