Aim of the research: The aim of this study was to answer the question of whether wearing compression products on the upper limb in the second phase of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) can be replaced with lymphatic application of kinesiology taping. The importance of antiedematous prophylaxis and the impact of complementary treatment on the results of physiotherapeutic management were assessed. Material and methods: Retrospective analysis was applied in 80 women after mastectomy treated for lymphoedema in the Holycross Cancer Centre in Kielce. The method CDT was applied in all the patients in phase I. In phase II, 50 (62%) women used compression sleeves in everyday life, and lymphatic applications of Kinesiology Taping (KT) were introduced in 30 (38%) patients. The research included the following: interview, linear measurement of the upper limb circumferences, palpation of tissues, and assessment of pain; statistical analysis in terms of these parameters was also performed. Results: Application of antiedematous prophylaxis was confirmed by 65% of the women, and complementary treatment was introduced in 75% of the patients from both groups. After phase I of the CDT a significant reduction in the circumferences of the limb in patients from both groups was demonstrated. Comparable results were observed after phase II, but in the second group the circumferences underwent a slight increase. After phases I and II of the therapy there was a beneficial change in the consistency, from hard into soft in both groups. Conclusions: The applied antiedematous prophylaxis was not essential in the course of the treatment. Introduction of radiotherapy had a significant impact on the state of the oedema. Application of physiotherapy resulted in an improvement in the oedema parameters in all the patients after phase I of the therapy. The results were maintained in the phase II in the women who used compression sleeves. Applications of KT did not provide an improvement of the state of the limb circumferences in phase II, but they affected the maintenance of the right oedema consistency and caused a reduction in pain. Introduction: Breast cancer constitutes 10.9% of all new cases of tumours registered in the Polish National Cancer Registry. Post-mastectomy lymphoedema of the upper limb is the most common post-operative complication. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of selected physiotherapeutic methods in the treatment of post-mastectomy lymphoedema. Material and methods: The study included 90 post-mastectomy patients in Stalowa Wola, Zamość and Tyczyn in the period from January 2014 to July 2016. The patients participated in two-week outpatient physiotherapy. In order to assess the effectiveness of lymphoedema treatment, circumferences of upper extremities were measured before and after physiotherapy. The results were then statistically analysed. Results: The majority of the subjects had undergone mastectomy within a period shorter than 5 years before. It was noted that the post-mastectomy upper limb had a significantly smaller circumference after physiotherapy than before physiotherapy (p<0.001). The study revealed no differences in the measurements of arm circumference with regard to the time since the mastectomy was performed. According to the patients, manual lymphatic drainage was the most effective type of physiotherapy treatment (p=0.04). Statistical analysis revealed significantly smaller arm circumferences after physiotherapy than before physiotherapy in patients treated 2-3 times (p=0.001) compared to patients who underwent either fewer or more treatments at the same time. Conclusions: 1. Two-week physiotherapy treatment proved to be the most effective in reducing lymphoedema in the arm area. 2. The period since the performance of the mastectomy had no impact on the effectiveness of lymphoedema treatment. 3. According to the post-mastectomy patients, manual lymphatic drainage was the most effective type of lymphoedema treatment. 4. Applying 2-3 physiotherapeutic procedures at the same time showed the best results.

Mastectomy due to breast cancer results in many problems and physical dysfunctions related with the constant necessity to protect the upper extremity at the site of the operated breast, and application of a specialist physiotherapeutic procedure. Rehabilitation is an integral part of the process of breast cancer treatment, and its primary goal is the limitation of selected physical, psychological, and social consequences of this cancerous disease. The achievement of rehabilitation goals requires teamwork-the simultaneous solving of problems in various spheres of the patient's life. This work should be considered as overall care activity concerning a human being according to a holistic approach. A very important element of rehabilitation after mastectomy is to reassure the patient that with the help of specialists she can overcome difficulties, solve her problems, and return to normal daily life. Streszczenie W wyniku mastektomii z powodu raka sutka u pacjentki powstaje wiele problemów i dysfunkcji fizycznych związanych z koniecznością ciągłej ochrony kończyny górnej po stronie operowanej piersi oraz stosowania specjalistycznego postępowania fizjoterapeutycznego. Rehabilitacja stanowi integralną cześć procesu leczenia nowotworu piersi, a zasadniczym jej celem jest ograniczenie niektórych fizycznych, psychicznych i społecznych następstw choroby. Realizacja celów rehabilitacji wymaga pracy zespołowej, jednoczesnego rozwiązywania problemów różnych obszarów życia osoby chorej. Należy traktować ją jako całokształt działań opiekuńczych dotyczących człowieka w ujęciu holistycznym. Bardzo ważnym elementem rehabilitacji po mastektomii jest utwierdzenie chorej w przekonaniu, że może ona z pomocą zespołu specjalistów pokonać trudności, rozwiązać swoje problemy i powrócić do codziennego życia.
