Methyl jasmonate alters polyamine metabolism and induces systemic protection against powdery mildew infection in barley seedlings

Abstract: Treatment of the first leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Golden Promise) seedlings with methyl jasmonate (MJ) led to small, but significant increases in levels of free putrescine and spermine 1 d later and to significant increases in levels of free putrescine, spermidine and spermine by 4 d following treatment. MJ-treated first leaves also exhibited significant increases in the amounts of soluble conjugates of putrescine and spermidine 1, 2 and 4 d after treatment. In second leaves of plants where the f… Show more

“…An addition of MeJA initiated de novo transcription of genes, such as PAL, that are known to be involved in the chemical defense mechanisms of plants (Gundlach et al, 1992). Another study in barley has found that the systemic protection provided by MeJA against Blumeria graminis accompanied significant increases in activities of PAL and POD (Walters et al, 2002). Response of MeJA-treated Norway spruce stems involves tissue-specific differentiation of traumatic resin ducts, terpenoid accumulation and induction of defense enzyme activities in the developing xylem tissues (Martin et al, 2002).…”

“…PAL has been proven to be a key enzyme in pathogen defense and stress response [69,70]. ZB8 is a rice PAL gene and has been shown to be induced under wounding and fungal cell wall elicitor treatment [71].…”

“…Reduced nitrogen sources such as the amines putrescine and arginine in combination with a low pH are also excellent in vitro inducers of DON production (Gardiner et al, 2009a(Gardiner et al, , 2009cMerhej et al, 2011). Putrescine and arginine accumulate in F. graminearum infected wheat heads (Gardiner et al, 2010) and their biosynthesis is known to be upregulated in plants during defence responses (Haggag and Abd-El-Kareem, 2009;Walters, 2002). However, it is not understood how amines induce DON production in the fungus.…”
