“…Of the 39 mixed-population studies, 21 were conducted in Tehran province [3941, 43, 45–46, 48–49, 51–54, 5961, 6466, 72–73, 75], specifically at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (n = 16) [3941, 43, 45–46, 48–49, 51, 5961, 6566, 73, 75] or Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (n = 5) [52–54, 64, 72]. The study objectives were categorized as genetic (n = 9 articles [38, 44, 50, 56, 62, 6566, 70–71], 449 patients), epidemiologic (n = 7 articles [47, 49, 6061, 63, 69, 74], 13,193 patients), pathologic (n = 7 articles [46, 48, 52, 55, 67–68, 72], 4,365 patients), clinical (n = 6 articles [39, 41, 43, 45, 57, 76], 393 patients), radiologic (n = 4 articles [, 86 patients), radiotherapy (n = 3 articles [54, 5859, 73], 54 patients), surgical (n = 2 articles [42, 51], 44 patients), or virologic [75] (n = 1, 58 patients).…”

“…In the past, several studies focused on investigating promoter methylation mainly using a targeted approach for a limited number of genes [4,68,11,30,14,15,34,38,47]. With time, molecular advances allowed interrogation at a larger number of CpG loci [35] culminating with the methylation assays from Illumina (27k and 450k) interrogating approximately 27.000 and 450.000 CpG loci [74,21].…”

“…MGMT (O6-methyl gyuanine methyl transferase) is an important DNA repair enzyme which specifically repairs the DNA adducts caused by alkylating agents like nitrosamines (Du et al, 2013). It specifically removes the alkyl group from the O6 position of guanine residue by transferring it to specific cytosine residue within the MGMT protein itself (Larijani et al, 2014). Impaired activity of the DNA repair enzyme MGMT may result in impaired DNA repairing capacity thereby resulting in accumulation of damaged DNA causing tumor growth.…”
