Aims: To estimate the population density of Pecari tajacu, determine the distribution pattern of this population in the sampling sites, determine habitat preference and evaluate the sustainability of the harvest in the three-year period. Study Design: Population study of collared peccaries in the wild, descriptive, and vertical in the municipality of Tzucacab, Yucatan, Mexico, during the years 2003-2004, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. Methodology: Seven linear transects of 5 km each were installed randomly in the municipality in 2003-2004 and 18 in each year from 2007 to 2009. The population estimate was made by direct sighting and counting of footprints in the same transects. The comparison of densities with the footprints’ counting method was by analysis of variance and t-student for samples paired with the sighting method. The distribution pattern was analyzed by the standardized Morisita index; habitat preference was analyzed by Bonferroni intervals and the harvest model was applied to evaluate sustainability. Results: Population densities decreased significantly (P < 0.01) by the footprints´ counting method from 2003-04 to 2007-09, from 1.16 to 0.26 animals/km2 respectively, with the sighting method was 1.87 and 1.78 animals/km2, the years 2003-04 and 2007-08 respectively, without significant difference (P = 0.05); In 2008-09 there was only one record. Local populations are distributed by clusters and prefer the acahual habitat between 2008-09. The sighting records and footprints are distributed mainly in the limits of the municipality of Tzucacab with the surroundings and the state of Quintana Roo. Harvest indices are within sustainability values but show a tendency to increase as the years progress. Conclusion: Local populations of collared peccaries show vulnerability, if the trend of the harvest index increases progressively.

Determining the diet of herbivores through the epidermal structures present in their excreta makes it possible to identify the plants consumed and estimate the variations at different times of the year. The objective of the study was to determine the botanical composition of the diet of the deer Central American Red Brocket (Mazama temama), in the Parque Nacional Cañón del Río Blanco (PNCRB), Veracruz, Mexico. The vegetation where the study was carried out is an evergreen tropical forest with the presence of induced vegetation. Sampling was carried out during the dry and rainy season of 2021. The plant species consumed were identified with the microhistological analysis of epidermal residues in fecal samples. The diet consisted of 18 species of plants belonging to 14 botanical families. The highest percentage of consumption was for the Solanaceae family (16.6%), followed by Arecaceae, Asteraceae, Cucurbitacea and Malvaceae (11.1% each). 66% of the plants were consumed in the dry season, and consumption increased by 34% during the rainy season, showing 100% of the plant species in the rainy season, showing 100% consumption in the rainy season.. The plants consumed were 10 herbaceous plants (55.5%), six arboreal plants (33.5%), one shrub and one grass (5.5% each); forest edge plants (BB = 44%), forest interior plants (IB = 33%) and cultured plants (CP = 23%), constituted the diet. M. temama adapted its diet to the availability and temporal and spatial distribution of plants in the habitat and based on climatic conditions (dry vs. rainy).

El venado cola blanca se distribuye en los matorrales desérticos de México y representa una importancia ecológica y económica. El conocimiento sobre la producción de forraje en su hábitat es fundamental para diseñar planes de manejo. El objetivo fue evaluar la producción de biomasa aérea en un matorral desértico micrófilo y la capacidad de carga (K) del venado cola blanca para que sirva de referencia en el manejo extensivo de esta especie en el municipio de Monclova, Coahuila, al norte de México. La investigación se realizó en la Unidad de Manejo para la Conservación de la Vida Silvestre “Rancho San Juan”, desde octubre de 2018 a agosto de 2019. Para estimar la producción en los estratos alto, medio y bajo, se empleó el método de Adelaide. La estimación de K se basó en el modelo de Holechek. Se calculó una producción promedio de 621.19 kg MS ha-1. El estrato medio contribuyó con la mayor producción (377.77 ± 73.92 kg MS ha-1), y el estrato alto presentó la menor (37.59 ± 23.59 kg MS ha-1). Se registró la mayor producción en verano y otoño, con valores de 744.35 y 607.93 kg MS ha-1, respectivamente. Se estimó K en 4.94 ha por venado anualmente, equivalente a 209 venados en una superficie de 1,030 ha. Sin embargo, mediante un censo aéreo en octubre de 2020, se estimó una densidad de 1.77 ha por venado o 582 venados en las mismas 1,030 ha. Aunque este análisis sugiere un sobreuso del hábitat, se observa que, el mejoramiento del hábitat puede mantener el crecimiento poblacional de venados.
