A new synthesis of amphiphilic homopolymers is described. In this synthesis, commercially available and inexpensive primary amines and di-epoxide molecules are utilized as AA- and BB-types of monomers in an amine-epoxy ‘click’ polymerization process. This process can be carried out in water and at room temperature. It does not require a catalyst or inert conditions and forms no byproducts. Therefore, the polymer synthesis can be carried out in open-air and bench-top conditions and a post-synthesis purification step is not required. The modularity of the synthesis, on the other hand, allows for facile structural modulation and tuning of the thermally triggered aggregation process in the temperature range of 7 to 91 °C. Finally, the underlying principles can be translated from linear architectures to polymer networks (hydrogels).

A series of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-1, PS-2, PS-3, and PS-4) in aqueous solutions were investigated in terms of morphological structure, size, and size distribution. Synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering analysis (SAXS) was carried out, providing morphology details, size and size distribution on the particles. PS-1, PS-2, and PS-3 were confirmed to behave two-phase (core and shell) spherical shapes, whereas PS-4 exhibited a single-phase spherical shape. They all revealed very narrow unimodal size distributions. The structural parameter details including radial density profile were determined. In addition, the presence of surfactant molecules and their assemblies were detected for all particle solutions, which could originate from their surfactant-assisted emulsion polymerizations. In addition, dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis was performed, finding only meaningful hydrodynamic size and intensity-weighted mean size information on the individual PS solutions because of the particles’ spherical nature. In contrast, the size distributions were extracted unrealistically too broad, and the volume- and number-weighted mean sizes were too small, therefore inappropriate to describe the particle systems. Furthermore, the DLS analysis could not detect completely the surfactant and their assemblies present in the particle solutions. Overall, the quantitative SAXS analysis confirmed that the individual PS particle systems were successfully prepared with spherical shape in a very narrow unimodal size distribution.

Impact of Welan Gum on Cement Paste Containing PCE Superplasticizers with Different Charge Densities

As a renewable materials, welan gum is microbial biopolymer which is fermented by bacteria. It is widely used in self‐compacting concrete because of its excellent rheological properties. After adding welan gum, the fluidity of cement will decrease rapidly. So it needs to be used together with superplasticizer. Two polycarboxylate superplasticizer with the acid/ether radio of 2 (PC‐2)and with the acid/ether radio of 6 (PC‐6)were synthesized. By FTIR measurements, carboxyl functional groups exists in the dialysed polymer. The specific anionic charge density measurement shows that PC‐6 provide more COO− than PC‐2 in alkaline solution. And TOC test analysis shows that the adsorbed amount of PC‐6 is higher than PC‐2 with low anionic charge density. PC‐6 with the higher COO− seems to be more affected by welan gum than PC‐2. From the rheological properties of cement paste mixed with PCEs and welan gum, it can be concluded that the addition of welan gum aggravates the trend of shear thickening. Hydration heat flow at different temperatures indicates the selected welan gum is capable of retarding early cement hydration even in high temperatures. Finally, the film forming property of the welan gum was initially studied through water loss rate test, and the film formation mechanism needs to be studied in the future.
