Microautophagy in nutritive phagocytes of sea urchins

Abstract: Two types of cells were observed in germinative epithelium of male and female sea urchins: germ cells and somatic accessory cells; the latter referred to as nutritive phagocytes. At the onset of gametogenesis, nutritive phagocytes accumulate nutrients and greatly increase in their size. As gametogenesis progresses, the accumulated nutrients are transferred from nutritive phagocytes into developing gametes, and size of the nutritive phagocytes decreases. An electron microscopic study of nutritive phagocytes in … Show more

“…Microautophagy is the non-selective lysosomal degradative procedure in the cell. During microautophagy, autophagosome is not formed and membrane invaginations surround cargo [ 20 ]. In CMA, the soluble chaperones selectively deliver proteins to the lysosome [ 21 ].…”

“…Chaperone‐mediated autophagy can eliminate mutant proteins by a protein translocation pathway that selectively feeds single substrate proteins bearing a Lys‐Phe‐Glu‐Arg‐Gln like motif (applied by cytosolic chaperones of the heat‐shock protein family) directly to the lysosome . Microautophagy efficiently carries out the direct sequestration of cargo, forming tubular invaginations at the lysosomal membrane . Macroautophagy delivers cargo to the lysosomes through the formation and maturation of specific intracellular membrane vesicles termed autophagosomes .…”

“…335 Microautophagy efficiently carries out the direct sequestration of cargo, forming tubular invaginations at the lysosomal membrane. 336 Macroautophagy delivers cargo to the lysosomes through the formation and maturation of specific intracellular membrane vesicles termed autophagosomes. 337 Among these three types, macroautophagy is the most common across species; thus, autophagy is hereafter referred to as macroautophagy.…”
