Microbial production of hyaluronic acid: the case of an emergent technology in the bioeconomy

Abstract: In 1988 a novel fermentation route to high molecular weight hyaluronan mediated by Streptococcus zooepidemicus was first reported. In a few years, following rapidly expanding demand for hyaluronan as a key ingredient of facial dermal fillers, streptococcal production was commercialized, first in Western Europe and North America, and subsequently in China. Outlining the case for the microbial production of hyaluronan, an emergent technology in the bioeconomy, the purpose of this study is to further advance the … Show more

“…The original Gram-positive Streptococcus strain used in the production of high-molecular-weight HA in the 1980s contains potentially harmful compounds such as endotoxins and proteins in the membrane that need to be removed in a series of filtration steps. The use of recombinant B. subtilis, which secretes HA into the medium, eliminates these tedious purification stages and delivers an HA powder obtained after high-temperature spray drying of the fermentation medium [71].…”

“…On the other hand, in the variable scale yields an increasing trend was observed that decreases in the year of Covid but resumed its trend in subsequent years. Recent research characterizes this trend as the use of an emerging technology that is necessary for policymakers to consider in the country [55][56][57].…”

“…After the first few years in which they supplied the ingredient to cosmetic and biomedical companies based in western Europe or North America, they became supplier of the medical and cosmetic formulations widely used in China and across the world as dermal fillers. 15 In this shift (Figure 1), the "vertically integrated" company will earn the huge difference in revenues existing between active ingredients and the final functional products sold on the rich healthcare, cosmetic, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical markets.…”
