The cosmetic segment is a rapidly growing industry that has been challenged in recent years due to the origin and impact of its ingredients and manufacturing techniques. With a focus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving the degradability of products, many conventional ingredients are being dismissed to meet more exigent regulations and consumer ethical demands. Biotechnology, and fermentation as the core technology, is a solution to support and drive more sustainable growth for the cosmetic industry. This review presents the latest research and development in fermentation applied to cosmetics and showcases multiple examples throughout all classes of ingredients: from functional compounds, such as oil and surfactants, to multi-faceted molecules with a wide spectrum of formulations and skin benefits derived from their emulsifying, antimicrobial or antioxidant properties. The bottlenecks associated with the commercialization of such ingredients, together with successful examples, are also discussed. The shift towards a bio-based beauty industry requires a combination of technical, regulatory and marketing efforts. Fermentation strategies to better utilize low-cost substrates and optimize microorganisms and processes will reduce overall costs, reducing the price gap with traditional methods of production. The testing, standardization and regulation of these new ingredients need to catch up with the fast research happening in the field. Finally, consumer communication is key to achieve a successful introduction of biotech ingredients in the market.

Background This research was focused on measuring the TFP bioeconomy post-Covid-19 in six regions of the world. Methods The panel data was organized with FAO Statistics data. Linear programming with an enveloping data analysis (DEA) approach was used to measure the Malmquist TFP indices to determine the inter-annual productivity and technical efficiency changes by region. Results The results show that the effect of Covid-19 on the bioeconomy productivity during the period 2012–2021 on average decreased by 11.6%. This effect was explained by the decomposition of the productivity change into the changes in technical efficiency. The workers decreased their efficiency by 11.7%. In the Northern American region, it decreased by 21.6%, in the Southern European region by 10.1, and in Western Europe by 11.7%. Conclusion The results show a downward trend that was affected in the year 2019 by Covid-19, however, it was possible to recover in the following year. One of the conclusions of these results is the effect of the immediate strategies that the governments of the region implemented. This effect was a little slower in the North American, Southeastern, and Eastern European regions. Finally, it is concluded that the measures implemented by the governments in the studied regions had an increasing effect in conditions of variable scale returns. In other words, the companies that remained on a constant scale decreased.

The educational gap for which science is not taught to managers, and management is not taught to scientists, is a significant obstacle to a company's success also in the bioeconomy field. Companies worldwide eagerly seek for new managers, researchers and technologists owning new knowledge and skills in topics spanning from circular production processes through new energy technologies and green chemistry. Most employers, however, have difficulty recruiting qualified professionals due to the shortage of qualified professionals. This shortage includes bioeconomy managers capable to successfully lead bioeconomy companies. Shaping the managers of successful bioeconomy companies, we argue in this study, requires to transfer a closer understanding of the nature of bioeconomy companies and their competitive landscape, as well as identifying the main guiding principles for managing these organizations.
