Microbiological diagnosis of infections caused by Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli in humans

Abstract: Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacteria which are worldwide in distribution, causing a zoonotic disease in humans called campylobacteriosis. These infections are mainly caused by eating contaminated food products, most often improperly prepared poultry meat. Campylobacteriosis usually takes the form of gastroenteritis, or inflammation of the intestines, and the characteristic symptoms are watery-mucous diarrhea often with the presence of blood in stool, nausea, v… Show more

“…In Poland, 431 cases of campylobacteriosis were reported in 2012, with a notification rate of 1.12 (10). Such a low number of cases in Poland, compared with other European countries, probably is due to the lack of universal routine bacteriological diagnosis in many laboratories and the lack of reporting by medical personnel of individuals with mild illness symptoms (28).…”

“…These bacteria cause campylobacteriosis, which is a zoonotic disease. They are Gram-negative, microaerophilic, motile bacilli belonging to the family Campylobacteriaceae ( Rokosz et al 2014 ). C. coli is one of the most common bacterial species isolated from patients with digestive system disorders ( Toledo et al 2017 ).…”
