Understanding the microbial communities involved in the global sulfur cycle is crucial for comprehending key biogeochemical processes on Earth. Most studies, however, are biased towards the marine ecosystems, as terrestrial sulfur cycle rarely investigated. In this study, we employed culture-dependent techniques and metagenomics to investigate functional, taxonomic and culturable of sulfur-cycling bacteria in extremely contaminated soils. Our findings reveal that elevated concentrations of xenobiotic pollutants, bulk sulfur content, and fluctuating redox conditions have shaped a unique microbial community involved in sulfur transformation. This community comprises non-canonical taxa carrying out typical reactions (e.g., sulfate-reducing acidobacteria), known taxa engaged in various oxidative, reductive, and organosulfur transformations (e.g., sulfur oxidizing alpha-, gamma-, and betaproteobacteria), as well as previously unidentified taxa that remain uncultured and may possess novel genes related to sulfur compound metabolism. Additionally, multiple taxa contribute to the replenishment of readily consumable compounds like sulfite and thiosulfate, facilitating cryptic biogeochemical cycling of molecules with high turnover rates but low absolute abundance. Our analysis also supports the idea that known sulfate-reducing bacteria behave differently in soils compared to aquatic habitats and belong to the soil rare biosphere, still greatly affecting their ecosystem.

The large-scale studies of the Lower Don and the Taganrog Bay coastal zone were carried out to determine the background concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils. The content of 15 priority PAHs was determined by saponification method with HPLC detection and varied widely from 77 µg kg−1 to 16,017 µg kg−1 with mean and median values of 1040 µg kg−1 and 406 µg kg−1, respectively. PAHs’ highest concentration level was observed in the soils of the Don River delta and industrial areas of Taganrog city affected by pyrogenic contamination sources. Background monitoring sites were mostly represented with hydromorphic (Fluvisols Salic and Tidalic Fluvisols) and automorphic (Rendzic Leptosols, Mollic Leptosols) soil types in the study area. The PAHs content in the soils of the background plots did not exceed 600 µg kg−1, with a share of low-molecular-weight PAHs: about 50%. Benzo(a)pyrene content did not exceed the maximum permissible concentration (20 µg kg−1), and low-molecular-weight compounds did not exceed the threshold level for the impact of polyarenes. In automorphic soils, naphthalene and phenanthrene (35–54%) dominated in the composition of the low-molecular-weight PAHs compounds, and only phenanthrene (59–70%) dominated in hydromorphic soils.

The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and biodiversity of yeasts in the soil and water samples of the city and district of Alytus after a fire at a tire processing plant. 11 soil and 3 water samples were taken each year for the periods of 2019-2021. The yeast count in the soil samples ranged from 10 2 to 10 5 CFU/g. In water samples, the count of yeasts varied between 0.00-10 3 CFU/g. A total of 114 yeast isolates were isolated from the soil samples and 46 yeast species were identified. No statistically significant changes in the phyla distribution of yeast species isolated from the soil were observed during the different study periods. A total of 25 yeast isolates were isolated from the water samples and 14 yeast species were identified. Statistically significant differences in the phyla distribution of yeast species isolated from water samples were observed. The obtained research data showed that the results of all chemical soil tests do not exceed the limit values specified in Lithuanian legal acts. The obtained results of the study allow us to state that the fire at the tyre recycling plant did not affect the prevalence and biodiversity of soil yeasts, but the possibility that the effect will be noticed after a longer period of time cannot be ruled out. We believe that this study significantly contributes to the dissemination of information about the fire at the tire recycling plant and its impact on the environment, brings more clarity and reduces doubts about the possible impact of pollution on the environment.
