Microbiology of the pericoronal pouch in mandibular third molar pericoronitis

Abstract: The microorganisms associated with mandibular third molar pericoronitis were investigated using direct microscopy and anaerobic culture method. The pericoronal pouch was sampled with paper points in A) 8 patients without mandibular third molar pericoronitis and B) 6 patients with mandibular third molar pericoronitis. Under the microscope, the microflora was found to be a complex mixture comprising gram-positive and gram-negative cocci, rods and filaments (including fusiform and curved rods), motile rods and sp… Show more

“…The microbial flora that develops in the distally located pseudopocket is the major cause. This flora is predominantly anaerobic (3,14,17,19,20,23,26). Therapeutic management usually involves a local surgical procedure and the prescription of antibiotics, often of the ␤-lactam family (7).…”

“…Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g.) has been detected in 100% of the samples of Leung et al [3], but only in 9.1% of the samples of Rajasuo et al [4] and in 20% of healthy third-molar pericoronal pockets by Mombelli et al [5]. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.) has been detected in 9.1% [4], in 17% -40% [5] and in 10.8% [6] of the samples, respectively.…”
