Microcystic adenoma of the pancreas (glycogen‐rich cystadenoma) with stromal amyloid deposits

Abstract: This is the first documented case of amyloid deposition in pancreatic serous adenoma. We indicate that the source of amyloid is an APP-like precursor secreted by stromal myofibroblasts.

“…Owing to slow growth, the presence of islets within the tumor may be expected 1 . The presence of stromal amyloid deposits was reported in a case of serous microcystic adenoma 14 . Staining for Congo red was negative in the present series and, in one case, studied ultrastructurally, thick collagen bundles were seen in the stroma, but no amyloid fibers were detected.…”

“…Thus, we applied keratin expression to a series of cases of serous microcystic adenoma in an attempt to elucidate the cell phenotype of this benign pancreatic cystic neoplasm. The presence of myoepithelial cells 13 and stromal amyloid deposits 14 in serous microcystic adenoma have been reported. In the present study, immunohistochemical expression of hormone receptors, keratins and actin, and the presence of stromal amyloid deposits were examined in 11 cases of serous microcystic adenoma of the pancreas.…”

“…There is no cytological atypia, nuclear pleomorphism, necrosis or mitosis. The stroma may be hyalinized and contain entrapped islets, nerve trunks, lymphocytic aggregates or amyloid deposits 18 . There may be irregular extension of the neoplasm into the adjacent pancreas, which shows obstructive/atrophic changes.…”
