Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma of the Eyebrow

Abstract: Microcystic adnexal carcinoma is a rare tumor; however, because of its aggressive local infiltration, ophthalmologists should consider this diagnosis and complete surgical excision. Long-term data are needed to establish outcomes from the different treatment options.

“…The tumor has been known by several other names in the past, including: sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma, malignant syringoma, sweat gland carcinoma with syringomatous features, aggressive trichofolliculoma, and combined adnexal tumor of the skin. As a rare tumor, with just over 300 cases reported worldwide since its initial description, it is difficult to generalize the small case series and reports to the population at large (2–31). In this article, we review what is known about the clinical presentation and behavior of MAC over time, histologic characteristics, and therapeutic options available as well as what therapy is currently recommended.…”

“…The factors common to our patients in whom tumor persisted after MMS (Patients B and D) were previous treatment, periocular site, and PNI. The periocular area is a common site for MAC, although this has been reported to account for less than 1.0% of all eyelid tumors 20 . Periocular MAC may be difficult to diagnose because diagnostic biopsies are usually small at this site.…”

Clement and colleagues reported three cases of periocular MAC treated using MMS and reviewed all other cases (n = 35) published in the English language literature.…”
