Microfluidic sedimentation cytometer for milk quality and bovine mastitis monitoring

Abstract: We report a rapid, low-cost, portable microfluidic sedimentation cytometer (SeCy) for assessing the somatic cell count and fat content of milk in 15 min using a "sample-in, answer-out" approach. The system consists of 12 independent microfluidic devices, essentially flattened funnel structures, fabricated on the footprint of a single plastic compact disc (CD). Each funnel structure holds 150 μL of milk, has an inlet for milk filling and an outlet for air to escape, and ends in a narrow, closed-end microfluidic… Show more

“…With dimensions similar to standard compact discs (CDs), centrifugal microfluidic discs are automated, disposable, and portable diagnostic tools for point of care settings (Garcia-Cordero et al 2010a;Haeberle et al 2006;Lee et al 2011;Madou et al 2006;Steigert et al 2006;Xi et al 2010). Rotor-based microfluidic systems are plastic discs that have embedded micro-features, such as channels and chambers, designed to hold and manipulate small volumes of fluids.…”

“…Beyond that, species-specific diseases such as bovine mastitis must be monitored, where ELISA can be used for early diagnosis [217]. One of the most recent and commercially available examples is a microfluidic sedimentation cytometer for milk quality and bovine mastitis monitoring, reported by Garcia-Cordero et al [218]. Their detection system consists of 12 independent microfluidic devices, essentially flattened funnel structures, fabricated on the footprint of a single plastic compact disc (CD).…”

“…Flow cytometry is a powerful technique for the measurement and analysis of various characteristics of cell samples, and is used in applications ranging from immunophenotyping [1,2] to gene diagnosis [3,4], bacterial analysis [5], clinical hematology diagnosis [6][7][8], and even food industry applications [9]. Accordingly, various discrete polychromatic detection systems [10] and spectral analysis systems [11,12] have been developed in recent decades.…”
