Microgrid Operation Optimization Using Hybrid System Modeling and Switched Model Predictive Control

Abstract: Optimization of economic aspects of microgrid operation in both grid-connected and islanded mode leads to contradictive definitions of optimality for both modes. There is no general agreement on how to cope with this duality. To address this issue, as well as modern energy market requirements and a better renewable energy utilization necessity in the case of large facilities, a comprehensive control solution utilizing the appropriate model is needed. In response, the authors propose a hybrid microgrid model co… Show more

“…The main challenge regarding photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation system as sources of clean energy is their intermittency leading to a variable output, which cannot be easily predicted [1]- [3]. A microgrid is a type of autonomous grid containing various distributed generation (DG) micro sources, power conditioning technology, loads, and storage energy devices [4]- [6]. There are different views of a microgrid in terms of capacity.…”

“…Another novel study presented a hybrid MG model that incorporated two switched receding horizon control laws. This strategy reduces the overall energy expenses and maximizes the efficient utilization of RESs for expansive business establishments, while accommodating fluctuations in grid connectivity [18]. “…To further adopt to the large-scale scattered renewable energy, the concept of multi-microgrid (MMG) was proposed. A typical MMG allows multiple operational mode, that is, it can be operated independently as well as interactively with the utility grid [3][4][5]. In particular, it becomes possible to improve resource utilization and economic benefits by trading electric power between MMG and the external equipment such as energy storage devices [6].…”
