Microhabitat and morphometric variation in two species of Prasiola (Prasiolales, Chlorophyta) from streams in central Mexico

Abstract: Prasiolales are characterized by high morphological plasticity. This problem in taxonomic delimitation of the species may be a result of environment heterogeneity. Habitat characteristics and morphological variation of P. mexicana and P. nevadensis, two species of freshwater leaflike thallus green algae, were investigated in five sites in central Mé xico where the morphological traits of these species overlap. Comparisons were made between habitat characteristics among streams and transects with and without Pr… Show more

“…While some species are fully aquatic and grow in freshwater streams (e.g. Rodriguez et al 2007), most species are either terrestrial (Rindi et al 1999) and maritime, or occur in the supralittoral zone of rocky marine habitats (e.g . Friedmann 1969;Anderson & Foster 1999).…”

“…The alternative, the application of the name Prasiola crispa to the whole group, would lead to major (and in our opinion unnecessary) difficulties in species circumscription. Besides Antarctic Prasiola , this group includes Prasiola borealis and P. mexicana , two species that differ substantially from P. crispa both in terms of morphology and habitat (Reed 1902, Setchell and Gardner 1920a,b, Printz 1964, Rodrìguez and Jiménez 2005, Rodrìguez et al. 2007, Moniz et al.…”
