Microplastics in Fish and Shellfish – A Threat to Seafood Safety?

Abstract: Plastic litter in the oceans is a major environmental problem, and small size plastics (microplastics) have been detected in many species of fish and shellfish consumed by humans. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the knowledge on microplastics in fish and shellfish in relation to a possible threat to seafood safety. In fish and crustacean species, the presence of microplastics has in most cases been investigated and detected only in the gastrointestinal tract, which is commonly not eaten, and when pres… Show more

“…Adverse effects of microplastics on shes have been found in many literatures (Jacob et al, 2020;Abhijit et al,2021;Anna et al,2021). Due to the attractive color, buoyancy, and food-like properties, sh are particularly prone to ingesting microplastics (Garrido Gamarro et al, 2020). The ingestion of microplastics by sh can cause a variety of consequences: 1) microplastics can lead to physical damage and histopathological alterations (Peda et It is wildly acknowledged in the literatures that the ingestion, accumulation and elimination of microplastics in shes are species-speci c (Mizraji et al, 2017;Xu and Li, 2021), which was also veri ed with our previous studies Zhang et al, 2021).…”

“…In the past years, reviews have been published about MPs pollution in fish, mainly referring to marine species [44,45], or discussed together with other environmental compartments in well defined geographical areas, like the Meditteranean sea [46], the Indian coasts [47], or the Yellow sea in China [48]. Others are related to the possible health risk for humans due to the consumption of fish and seafood [49][50][51]. Finally, many tried to summarize the results obtained from laboratory trials [35,[52][53][54].…”

“…Similarly, Rist et al (2018) highlighted that food and beverages likely only constitute a minor exposure pathway to human microplastic exposure. Based on the current knowledge on microplastics in seafood, there is no evidence that food safety is compromised (Gamarro et al 2020).…”
