MicroRNAs in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) provide insight into both the biology and clinical behavior of many human cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The dysregulation of miRNAs in NPC results in a variety of tumor-promoting effects. Furthermore, several miRNAs are prognostic markers for NPC. In addition to cellular miRNAs, NPC samples also often contain miRNAs encoded by Epstein-Barr virus, and these miRNAs may impact NPC biology by targeting both cellular and viral genes. Given their numerous putative roles in NPC… Show more

“…Numerous studies have functionally characterized causal links between miRNAs and tumour development or progression in a subset of non-HPV related HNC (reviewed in [56]), which further highlights the utility of miRNAs as accurate tumour biomarkers. However, miRNA signatures have not been incorporated into clinical practice to date.…”

“…As NPC is highly correlated to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, EBV viral RNAs (miRNAs56, long non-coding RNAs7) and proteins are of diagnostic powers. In clinical practice, EBV capsid antigen IgA (VCA-IgA), early antigen Ig A (EA-IgA), nuclear antigen (EBNA1) IgA, and circulating EBV DNA are widely used for diagnosis and screening of NPC8910.…”

“…Many researchers are confronted with difficulties in looking for biomarkers for NPC, which is useful to study cellular processes and monitor or recognize disruption or alterations in the cellular processes of cancer cells. 29,30 These studies can reveal why NPC occurs, and they provide specific biological targets for the early diagnosis of NPC. Biomarkers in relation to nanotechnology is a new era of early cancer diagnosis and precise drug delivery.…”
