Microscopic investigations of some selected species of Papilionaceae through SEM and LM from Skardu valley, northern Pakistan

Abstract: Pollen morphology of 10 species and foliar epidermal anatomy of eight species of Papilionaceae from Skardu valley, northern Pakistan has been estimated for the first time. The present study was commenced with an aim to provide a detailed account of the pollen morphology by scanning electron microscopy and foliar epidermal anatomy by light microscopy. The pollen aperture was tricolporate with reticulate exine in the selected species. Stomata types are actinocytic, paracytic, and anomocytic. Irregular or polygon… Show more

“…Palynological characteristics are very useful. Some previous studies also show the use of scanning electron microscope for the identification of different groups of plants (Ahmad et al, 2018;Ahmed et al, 2019;Ashfaq et al, 2018;Ashfaq et al, 2019b;Amina et al, 2020;Bahadur et al, 2018b;Bahadur et al, 2019a;Bahadur et al, 2019b;Gul et al, 2019a;Gul et al, 2019b;Gul et al, 2019c;Sufyan et al, 2018;Bano et al, 2019;Qureshi et al, 2019;Arshad et al, 2019;Rashid et al, 2018).…”

“…The pollen surface of N. lotus has verrucated ornamentation with microgranules, whereas that of N. nucifera has regulated ornamentation without microgranules ( Figure 1 c,d). The pollen micro-morphology evaluation using SEM analysis was also recorded as a useful tool to identify other plant groups, i.e., Hoya siamica complex species [ 12 ]; Betula utilis , B. maximowicziana , B. dahurica , B. pubescens , B. pendula , and B. humilis [ 13 ]; species members of Mimosaceae [ 14 ]; species members of Papilionaceae [ 15 ]; etc.…”

“…Eight types of different surface ornamentation namely, psilate faintly regulate, perforate, regulate to verrucate have been observed in the Fabaceae taxa (Khan et al, 2020). Pollen were monads, tricolporate, isopolar, radially symmetrical, shape of pollen is suboblate in A. candolleanus with P / E ratio 0.8 and subprolate in A. graveolens along with P / E ratio 1.2 (Bano et al, 2019). Our observation also agrees with the findings of Ferguson and Skvarla (1981).…”

“…Pollen characters were identified according to Grant-Downton (2009). Pollen measurements were recorded based on their mean values and standard deviation (Bano et al, 2019;Khan et al, 2018;Simons & Chinnappa, 2004).…”
