Microstructural analysis of demineralized primary enamel after in vitro toothbrushing

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to investigate, in vitro, the morphological characteristics of demineralized primary enamel subjected to brushing with a dentifrice with or without fluoride. In order to do so, 32 enamel blocks were divided in 4 different groups containing 8 blocks each. They were separately immersed in artificial saliva for 15 days. The experimental groups were: C -control; E -submitted to etching with 37% phosphoric acid gel (30 s); EB -submitted to etching and brushing 3 times a day with a… Show more

“…This softened layer was vulnerable to mechanical forces, and was removed by the brushing procedure, resulting in exposure of a harder enamel surface. The scanning electron microscopy images also corroborate this hypothesis 26 . Due to this fact, the wear increased when eroded enamel was subjected to abrasion, but the %SMHC was lower when compared to that of erosion alone.…”

“…Low concentrations of carbamide peroxide promote varying degrees of surface porosity and structural change, depending on the bleaching agent 4,10,13,24 . The use of abrasive-containing dentifrice might result in enamel microwear 14,21 . The slight abrasion in this enamel may remove the superficial degraded layer and promote a "new" surface, even though, with high roughness values 14 .…”

The bleached enamel surfaces treated with abrasive dentifrices with or without fluoride were markedly altered in our study.…”

“…For instance, the characteristics of demineralized primary enamel subjected to brushing with a dentifrice with or without fluoride. 6 Due to a lack of clear conclusions, this study was conducted to further evaluate the remineralization potential of caseinphosphopeptid-amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (CPP-ACPF) paste on enamel lesions using SEM. The results emphasize the importance of using fluoride in combination with phosphate to treat caries at an early stage for permanent teeth; hence, an approach to managing comprehensive caries prevention is proposed to provide an initial healthy dentition for children and to contribute to the findings of in vitro studies in the dentistry field, which is still in need of supporting evidence.…”
