Microstructure analysis of AC corona aging of silicone rubber

Abstract: A needle-plane electrode system was used to study the characteristics of the silicone rubber under AC corona. Microstructure and chemical structure change analysis on the surface of silicone rubber after corona ageing was made by using SEM, AFM and FTIR. Infrared spectrum shows that corona would cause the rupture of fundamental chain and branched chain of material. Along with the increase of corona aging time, the content of fundamental chain and branched chain will decrease. The continuous increase in the con… Show more

“…The holes appearance can be attributed to the evaporation of volatile components during the aging process [26]. In fact, it has been reported that the distribution of the surface into blocks and the appearance of cracks is a sign of aging of the material [27]. These observations are very consistent with those reported in previous works [18], [19],[26].…”

“…The advantage of EDS is that it could be used along with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) so that the element composition of a specific area could be acquired and researchers could compare the test results of different areas to study the relationship between microstructural appearances and the element composition [8].…”

“…Zhu et al [3] found that the hydrophobicity of HTV silicone rubber obviously decreased under AC corona. Xie et al [4] analysed the microstructure of silicone rubber after corona ageing. They found the increase of surface roughness and the breakage of the fundamental chemical chain under the effect of corona ageing.…”
