Microstructure and properties of C/C–ZrC composites prepared by hydrothermal deposition combined with carbothermal reduction

Abstract: Carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix containing ZrC (C/C-ZrC) composites were prepared by hydrothermal deposition combined with carbothermal reduction. The submicron ZrC particles (100~300 nm) were dispersed in the matrix. The stress-strain curves of the composites presented a typical pseudo-plastic fracture behavior. The mass and linear ablation rates of the composites were 3.7×10-3 g/s and 4.2×10-3 mm/s, respectively. The formation of ZrO 2 glass layer reduced erosion of the composites in the ablation cente… Show more

“…First of all, the curve after introducing PyC becomes smoother with slope of linear elastic stage declining, which indicates the decreases in modulus of composite. The modulus mismatch between the carbon fiber and the ZrC-SiC ceramic matrix has always been the noteworthy factor impairing the strengthening and toughening, and the PyC interface layer plays an important role in alleviating the modulus mismatch [48]. Secondly, after introducing the PyC interface layer, the strain corresponding to maximum stress increases from 1.35% to 1.5%-2%, which manifests the improvement of damage tolerance to some degree.…”

“…115 Figure 10B shows a closer view of the EPD-applied ZrB 2 coating on the C f, followed by a ZrB 2 /B 4 C matrix achieved via solvent-based slurry infiltration. 115 Another method used recently by Li et al 117 to prepare a C f -reinforced ZrC UHTCMC involves the combination of hydrothermal deposition and carbothermal reduction. Sucrose was employed as a carbon source, while ZrCl 4 was used for hydrothermal deposition, resulting in a ZrO 2 matrix.…”

“…The reduction of ZrO 2 resulted in a dispersion of submicron ZrC (100-300 nm) in the matrix. 117 The carbon layer from the sucrose on the fibers both hindered damage during the carbothermal reduction and served as an interfacial layer, resulting in fiber pullout during bend testing. 117 These are some of the examples of the success of hybrid processing techniques for creating UHTCMCs with denser matrices and more robust fiber fidelity, and in a faster/more cost-effective manner than what can be achieved with a single processing technique.…”

“…However, carbides play a more important role than nitrides in strengthening grain boundaries due to the difference in the segregation ability . Segregation of elements can not only increase k but also reduce the critical grain size in the Hall–Petch relationship, resulting in an inverse Hall–Petch relationship (yield strength decreases with diminished grain size, contrary to the regular Hall–Petch relationship, due to the transformation of the mechanism of plastic deformation for smaller grain sizes). The increase of the secondary phase may also abate k .…”
