Microwave‐assisted extraction and antioxidant activity of star anise oil from Illicium verum Hook.f

Abstract: In this study, microwave-assisted extraction with ethanol (MAEE) of star anise oil from Illicium verum Hook.f. has been optimised by response surface methodology (RSM). A maximum yield of star anise oil was obtained at an optimum condition: the ratio of solvent to sample 17 mL g À1 , extraction time 16 min and microwave power 505 W. Accordingly, the highest yield of star anise oil was about 24.98%, which was much higher than that of steam distillation (SD), 7.17%. Oxygenated organic compounds in representative… Show more

“…trans ‐Anethole is the main component of I. verum fruit. The reported in vitro activities of the volatile components of I. verum include antimicrobial (De et al ., ; Huang et al ., ; Lee et al ., ; Peng et al ., ; Singh et al ., ; Yang et al ., ) and antioxidant activities (Cai et al ., ; Padmashree et al ., ; Singh et al ., ) and so on. The in vivo anti‐inflammatory activity of anethole (Domiciano et al ., ), the in vivo locomotor and anxiolytic activities of an extract of I. verum on the central nervous system (Chouksey et al ., ), and so on have been reported.…”

“…When the ratio was higher than 30 mL/g, the diffusion speed decreased, leading to the yield decreased (Cai et al . ). Thus, 30 mL/g was selected as the center point of ratio of water to the raw material in the following RSM experiments.…”

“…, the FT‐IR spectra of five polysaccharides extended the absorptions at 400–900 cm −1 , and they were assigned to the skeletal modes of pyranose rings (Cai et al . ). Characterization of five polysaccharides by FT‐IR analysis showed the typical absorption of polysaccharides.…”

“…The main ingredient in star anise oil, anisole, was also found that exhibits various pharmacological properties such as anesthetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities [5][6]. Besides, anisole has been conveniently transformed to a functional monomer which possess good thermostability and good mechanical properties [7][8][9][10] .…”
