Microwave Heating Remediation of Light and Heavy Crude Oil-Contaminated Soil

Abstract: The remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-polluted soil with microwave irradiation is a promising technology due to its high decontamination efficiency and low energy consumption. The current study is to experimentally investigate the performance of microwave heating remediation of light and heavy crude oil-contaminated soil in a lab-scale apparatus. The results show that 98.95 and 96.39% of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in light and heavy crude oil-contaminated soil can be removed in 15 and 20 min at 100… Show more

“…This indicates that the removal of light crude oil from the soil is much more efficient and consumes less energy due to differences in the nature of removal for different fractions. The main removal of С 10 -С 16 , С 16 -С 22 and С 22 -С 40 at 200 °С, 300 °С, and 400 °С shows [14] that the removal of both small and large molecular fractions is effective during microwave irradiation, since it occurs at a temperature much lower than their boiling point. Moreover, organic matter in light and heavy crude oil-contaminated soil is maintained at a moderate level (i. e., 19 and 21.7 g/kg at 400 °C) after microwave treatment, which provides an opportunity for soil reuse.…”

“…As oil pollutants enter the soil, they can be readily absorbed by soil-reactive surfaces, altering their physical, chemical, and biological properties. , Moreover, petroleum pollutants can also be transported and bioaccumulated in various media, posing serious threats to human health and the environment . As an important reservoir and transfer station for petroleum hydrocarbons, soil plays a crucial role in reclaiming contaminated sites. Rapid in situ monitoring of petroleum pollutants and remediation measures are essential for legacy site redevelopment.…”
